Origin: The origin of this craft dates back to 400 years during the era of Mughals. The city of Saharanpur is enriched with art forms that still echoes the rich culture of Mughal emperors.
Technique: The sheesham or teak woods are used for making these furnitures. Sheesham woods are used for making small wooden products with minute carving and teak woods are used for creating bigger ones or antiques. The making of these wooden furnitures is a tedious process. Firstly, the wood is chemically treated and is seasoned. Basic sketch is done on them. Then it goes into phase of carving and holes are drilled. Later on, the engravings are chiseled out. To create geometrical, floral or typographical patterns, inlaying is done. The brass strips are cut into desired shapes and are die-pressed to obtain the patterns. Sandpaper is used for smoothening out the carvings. The parts are assembled, wood adhesive is added and is nailed. Then rivets/ hinges are added to complete the furniture’s outlook.
Modernization: In recent days, service trolleys, kitchen utensils, cutleries, door partitions, etc. are made using similar process.
